Black, Orange, and Green Stains - What Are They

Mold or mildew shows itself in a toilet bowl as a black, orange, or green ring that can spread as it streaks down the inside of the bowl. Mold or mildew will also cause black, orange, or green discoloration that may appear at the end of a showerhead, shower doors or curtains, sink drains, bathtubs, tiles, and grout. This discoloration is associated with several factors having to do with moisture but is typically not a problem with water quality. Mold or mildew is common where there is moisture. Bathrooms are especially susceptible as moisture levels are often high.

Most mold or mildew will appear if any water sits for a period of time in the open air. This is why this type of issue in bathrooms is very common. Well ventilated spaces can prevent mold and mildew. However, well-ventilated spaces can also carry airborne bacteria that can ultimately result in mold, mildew, or pink stains.
